Types of Baby Diapers in India
I will start the review by discussing the various types of Diapers available in India and their Pros and Cons. You can (and should) use a combination for two or more of these types of diapers depending upon the needs and requirements of your baby. I will discuss each of those scenarios below.
1. Traditional Cloth Diapers or Langots
If you ask your grandmother for suggestions, there is a good chance that she will recommend the good old Langot. She is also right to recommend this product. Langots are actually one of the most hygienic ways to diaper your child.
However, the main problem is the number of times you need to change, wash & dry them. The problem gets more severe during night time or during the winters. You cannot afford to keep your infant in a wet Langot while you are busy with your household chores.
Langots are best for healthy, rash free health bottom as it provides enough aeration.
The ideal way is to use them during the daytime when you are free to spend time with your baby. You can change them as and when the baby wets them. Even if you are able to use them for a couple of hours during the day, it should be enough to keep your baby rash free.
You can buy around 24 Langots to start off with (Don’t worry they are cheap) – Try this product on Amazon
Precaution:
If you are a first-timer, be prepared to wash a lot of clothes if you plan to use Langots. Always use an absorbent cloth below your baby to protect your mattress and linen.
2. Disposable Diapers
These are the most commonly used diapers currently world over. The advantages of this type of diapers are listed below:
- They have much absorbing power compared to traditional diapers
- These diapers (If used correctly) are leak proof
- You can discard them after one use. So they provide ease of use and save time
There are two main types of disposable diapers that you need to know off.
a. Pant Style Diapers
As the name suggests, these diapers are like shorts. You put them on similar to how you will make your baby wear shorts. Once the diaper is full you can just tear off the sides to take it off.
b. Diapers with side straps
These diapers are open on three sides. To use them, you will place the baby on an open diaper and then fasten the straps from the side. The pack that you buy should have instructions on how to use them.
For a detailed guide on how to change your baby’s diaper, make sure to watch the video toward the end of the article.
3. Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers are in a rage lately. These are not the cloth diapers we usually see in India. Cloth diapers nowadays are available in multiple different types. You can choose the one that suits your requirements the best.
Normally, there are two aspects to cloth diapers. The first one being the outer cover and the second component being the absorbent insert you use inside the diaper cover.
I will soon be writing a detailed review on cloth diapers and its usage. In the meanwhile, you can write to me in the comments section below if you have any specific questions. Do watch the video towards the end to see how to use the All-in-one cloth diaper.
– Fitted Cloth Diapers
Fitted diapers are generally one sized. It means that you will need to buy new diapers every few months as your child grows. The out cover of these diapers is not waterproof. The main advantage of these diapers is that they are cheaper compared to the other two options.
However, in the long run, you end up spending more. I will not recommend you to buy a single sized fitted diaper. There may be instances that you may need to buy fitted diapers for newborns since the AIOs might be too big for them.
– Pocket / Sleeve Diapers
These cloth diapers have a specially made pocket or a sleeve which open on two sides. This pocket/sleeve is used to add an additional insert into it. This makes the diaper last longer. These diapers generally also have a waterproof outer shell so that the diaper does not leak.
Good products will have a fleece cloth on the inside (This will what will remain in touch with the baby’s skin).
There 3 main materials used for the inserts. First and cheapest option being the microfibers. If you use this material, make sure the insert does not directly come in contact with your baby’s skin.
The other two commonly used options are charcoal and/or bamboo. Both the these are good options that you can use.
– AIO Diapers (All in One)
The AIOs is fitted that comes with a waterproof shell. They are also adjustable and can be used by babies of multiple age groups. You can add an additional charcoal/bamboo insert if you need to use it for long journeys or at night.
I prefer buying a combination of sleeve and AIOs so that you can use them interchangeably as per your requirements.

What Size of Diaper is Right for my Baby?
Diapers are not categorized based on the age but the weight of the baby. As with clothes, you should keep in mind that no two brand diapers will fit the same way. As you go through your first few diaper brands and packets, you will get a better understanding of them.
Tip – Always have a packet of larger size diaper handy at your home, once you realize the current diaper is getting a bit tight.
Also, it is important to keep in mind the fit of the diaper is more important. The diaper should fit well just below the belly button. The leg cuffs should also snugly fit your baby’s thighs. The diaper should not be too tight or loose. In most cases, a diaper will leave mainly because it is too big for your baby rather than being small.
The various sizes have been listed in the table below:
Best Diapers for Newborns in India
As with clothes, there are separate diapers available for Newborns. Newborn babies have very delicate and sensitive skin, so a lot of brands offer special products to make them feel comfortable and keep them dry.
I found and personally used the Pampers Active Baby diapers for Newborns.
1. Pampers Active Baby – Taped
I will start the list of Best Baby Diapers in India with a product all new moms can start off with.
Newborns have special requirements. They have sensitive skin and they pee a LOT. This means you will need to keep checking the diaper frequently to ensure your baby does not remain wet.
Pampers Active Baby solves all these problems for you:
- It has mild lotion infused in it to keep your baby’s skin moisturized.
- The diaper is soft and easily adjustable as per your baby’s needs since it uses straps
- Wetness indicator to show you when the diaper is wet and is time to change it
- Good absorption capacity

If you wish to opt for a more economical option, you can go for the second diaper on my list.
2. Huggies Ultra Soft – Taped
This diaper is much cheaper compared to the Pampers diaper I discussed above. It also has some similar features like the wetness indicator. The absorption quality of the diaper is really good for the price you pay. I also did not face any issues with leakage.
Huggies also claims that this product is clinically proven to prevent diaper rashes.

I don’t recommend buying pant style diapers for newborns. The babies body and skin are so fragile at this point that I don’t want him/her to undergo the process of wearing pants multiple times a day.
Also, most new parents will not find it very easy to make their baby wear pants. Hence, even though it is a good product, the Pampers Premium Pants for newborns don’t find a mention on my list.
Best Diapers for Older Babies – Taped & Pants
I preferred only tape/strap style diapers for my baby until he was about a year old. Pant diapers are cheaper but they used to cause nasty marks on his thigh. I personally find straps more convenient to use (You can adjust the straps as per the needs of your baby) and also my baby seems to be more comfortable in them.
p.s. – The numbering of the products is continued from the section above.
3. Diaper Champ Baby Diapers – Taped
This is my preferred choice of diaper once your baby outgrows the newborn size. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review, they offered only 4 sizes in India S to XL (They don’t offer a specific diaper for Newborns).
There are a lot of reasons why I prefer this brand over the more established diapers brands in India. The reasons are as below:
- This product does not contain any harmful chemicals, parabens, chlorine, bleach or fragrance. It is a “pure diaper” in a way.
- 4 different colours in one pack. This can help you keep a track of when the diaper was changed last. You can colour code different colours for the time of day.
- The diaper is equipped with a wetness indicator. This helps you change the diapers on time and keep your baby dry
- Good absorption rate. 6 different layers for absorption. They are designed to absorb the urine to the bottom-most layer, keep the top layer dry.
- Diaper Champ Certifications – ISO 9001:2000, ISO 13485:2003, CE(Europe), and GMC(Global Manufacturer Certification). The product is regularly tested by QB/T 2493 & GB 15979.

4. Huggies Dry – Best Value in Taped Diapers
If you are looking for a more cost-effective option in taped diapers, you can opt for Huggies dry. They last longer and I could not find a leakage problem if you wear them properly.
They do not have any fancy features like wetness indicator but they do the job and are cost effective.

However, I a few friends who do find using pant style diapers more convenient. These diapers are easier for Dads to use since they don’t have to worry about the fitting. The elastic around the baby’s legs ensures the diaper does not leak.
So, if you do prefer Pant style diapers, below are some good options for you.
5. Mamypoko – Pant Style Diapers
These are amongst the best selling baby diapers in India along with the product listed right below. Some of the highlights of this product are:
- As per the company claims the diaper can absorb around 7 glasses of urine. I did find the diaper quite absorbent
- Unlike other regular diapers, this does not get heavy at the bottom since it spreads the wetness evenly across the surface due to its unique design

6. Pamper Pants
Pampers pants are equipped with air channels which helps keep your baby’s bottom dry. This reduces the chance of your baby getting diaper rashes.
The biggest advantage is that Pampers also offers a Monthly Mega Box for this product. You can order diaper packets in bulk for the entire month and save money while doing so.

Best Cloth Diapers in India
Cloth diapers are also called reusable or washable diapers. These diapers can save you cost in long run. However, the initial investment that you need to make is more. Cloth diapers also keep your baby in contact with more natural materials.
I won’t get into the argument of, Are cloth diapers really eco-friendly? There are a lot of pro and cons given by each side and honestly, I don’t have the expertise to measure the carbon footprint of both products.
I honestly believe it is more a matter of personal choice and convenience. It takes a lot of time and effort to maintain cloth diapers, while disposable are easier to work with. I will suggest you try both products and then go with what you think is the best for your baby.
7. Cloth Diapers by Motherly
At the time of writing this review, this brand was available only on Amazon. They have a good range of designs. Most of their products have a waterproof out layer.
The diapers can fit a wide range of babies (Check the product page before placing the order). The product that I ordered was suitable for babies ranging from 3 to 13 Kgs.
The diaper also has multiple range adjustable buttons, you can keep changing the size of the diaper as your baby grows.

This is a good economical option available in India. The insert that comes with the diaper uses micro fibres. So ensure you place the insert properly inside the sleeve and not over it. (The insert should not directly touch your baby’s bottom).
Optionally, you can buy either charcoal or bamboo inserts that are available on Amazon separately.
8. Cloth Diapers by SuperBottoms
SuperBottoms is another Indian brand that provides quality cloth diapers. They have a lot of good designs, developed specifically for Indian customers.
However, I do feel their products are a tad bit more expensive. If you have the budget, you can surely go for their products, the quality is no doubt good.
Alternately, you can wait for a sale to come by and hope they offer a good discount on their products. You can buy in bulk then 🙂
